Faulkner University law enforcement alumnus Captain Daniel Phipps is a graduate of the 285th session of the FBI National Academy and was honored as Faulkner’s Distinguished Alumnus for the College of Arts and Sciences’ Criminal Justice and Legal Studies department.
Phipps graduated from Faulkner with a Master of Justice Administration and is currently serving as the Captain of the Patrol Division for the Oxford Police Department in Oxford, Alabama. As captain, he is responsible for all four patrol shifts, which has 40 officers. He is also supervisor of the jail and the communications division.
Although Phipps completed his degree as an online student at Faulkner, he still felt he was a part of the Faulkner Family, he said.
“While I did not physically attend the college I did feel part of the university by interacting with my professors, college staff, and my fellow students,” Phipps said. “The education and professors influenced me by making me look at different viewpoints to things that I only saw through my personal experience.”
Phipps has been serving the citizens of Oxford since 2010. He is a graduate of the Northeast Alabama Law Enforcement Academy 142nd Session. During his service with the Oxford Police Department, he served as a patrolman, investigator, sergeant, and lieutenant before being promoted to captain in 2023.
Phipps has been certified by P.O.S.T. as a tier 1 investigator and by Alabama Law Enforcement Agency as a traffic homicide investigator. He is an axon taser instructor and a strategic self-defense and gunfighting tactics (SSGT) instructor. As the uniformed division’s captain, he oversees the department’s patrol operations and other specialized units.
Phipps also serves in the Alabama Air National Guard as a Master Sergeant with the 187th Security Forces Squadron. Captain Phipps started his military career with the Army Reserves in 2005.
Captain Phipps holds a Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice from Jacksonville State University, a Masters in Criminal Justice Administration from Faulkner University, and a graduate certificate in Criminal Justice Education from the University of Virginia. He is also a graduate of the 285th Session of the FBI National Academy in Quantico, Virginia.
Additionally, Phipps has accompanied Faulkner Director of Specialized Recruiting Alison Cahoon to the FBI National Academy as a ambassador of Faulkner and they plan to return again in 2025.
