One-Day Seminar: Employment Law for HR Professionals

Seminar Overview

This one-day seminar introduces HR professionals to the essential concepts of employment law and how these principles affect day-to-day workplace practices. Through practical examples and case studies, participants will gain a strong foundation in understanding the legal framework that governs the employment relationship and learn how to recognize and prevent potential workplace issues before they escalate.

Designed specifically for those in the HR field, this seminar emphasizes the basics of employment law while building confidence to apply these principles in real-world workplace situations.

 

Learning Objectives

 

  • Differentiate between employment law principles in the private and public sectors.
  • Identify major federal and state employment laws that shape workplace policies.
  • Analyze workplace cases to recognize potential legal risks and preventive practices.
  • Apply frameworks to evaluate discrimination, appropriate pay practices, and wrongful discharge cases.
  • Implement best labor relation practices in employee relations and assist in drafting policies, employee handbooks, and contracts.
  • Integrate preventive strategies to avoid costly litigation and foster fair labor relations.

 

Seminar Schedule

Morning Session

  • Introduction and icebreaker case studies.
  • Overview of employment law: employment at will, civil rights protections, and state/federal coverage.
  • Key topics in workplace regulation, including contracts, handbooks, and off-duty conduct.

 

Afternoon Session

  • Introduction to major employment laws such as Title VII, Pregnancy Discrimination, Equal Pay Act, and religion in the workplace.
  • Discussion of emerging issues including affirmative action, employment torts, and social media.
  • Case study workshop applying legal concepts to common HR situations.
