If you cannot find Raul Cardenas, talk to one of his teammates, who will pull out his cell phone and call the Community College transfer right then and there. “I like the, how do you say it - atmosphere - here.” In the short time the native of Guayaquil, Ecuador has been on the Faulkner campus, he is already experiencing a closer relationship with his Eagles Basketball teammates than he did in two years at the Gainesville, Florida school he attended for his first two years. He has found the campus to be friendly and the atmosphere welcoming since he has arrived at Faulkner.
Raul has visited his home in Ecuador only four times in the two plus years that he has been in the United States. He says that it is important for him to get his degree, and that playing basketball is helping him reach that goal. While Faulkner is a small school, it has an impressive program, and he is happy to be playing for Coach Jim Sanderson. When the 6’3” player was asked what position he plays he responded, “1 or 2 (point guard or shooting guard), but Coach wants me to play some 3 (small forward). On this team it really doesn’t matter because we are going to run all the time.” He has fit right in with his team, with their style of play, and with Faulkner University.
