Phi Lambda cooks up a cure

The 56 ladies of Phi Lambda and a handful of their alumnae have opened their kitchen drawers and cupboards and pulled out their favorite family recipes to compile in a breast cancer awareness cook book. The cook books are being sold as a fundraiser for the Joy to Life Foundation, a regional non-profit organization that provides free mammograms to women of South Central Ala., who could not otherwise afford them.
The Joy to Life Foundation hosts its major fundraiser, the Walk of Life, at Cramton Bowl on April 18, 2009. This will be Phi Lambda's third year to attend the Walk of Life and make a donation to the organization. This year their team consists of over 40 students, mothers, siblings and boyfriends. Amy Schroeder, a sophomore Business Administration major, is the club's service project coordinator and has organized their participation in this event. "So far, we've raised over $2,000," she says. At the Walk of Life, Phi Lambda's team will participate in the 5K race, approximately three miles.
As for many people, the fight against breast cancer is significant to the members of Phi Lambda. "Most of the girls in the club know someone, friend or relative, who has breast cancer, so it especially hits home," Schroeder states, "we do this in support of the fight against breast cancer, those who are still fighting and those who have passed away."
The cook book bears this dedication: "This cook book is dedicated in the memory and honor of these brave women who have taken on the fight against breast cancer and also to our friends, families and neighbors who will join with us to continue battling on until we are triumphant."
