Cloverdale Center for Family Strengths honors families

Two families are honored for their strengths at the annual award ceremony.
Recognizing the crucial importance of healthy role modeling to the church and our society, Dr. Donnie Hilliard and the Cloverdale Center for Family Strengths highlighted two exemplary families with the Tower of Strength Awards. Dr. Cecil May and his wife, Winnie, of Montgomery were the recipients of the Tower of Strength Marriage Award, while the Eric and Denise Thornton family also of Montgomery was bestowed the Tower of Strength Family Award.

Married for over 50 years, Dr. May, who is the dean of the V.P. Black College of Biblical Studies, and his wife Winnie, are described as a couple who exemplifies the highest ideals of Christian marriage. A team whether in ministry, work, leisure or travel, the Mays have raised four Christian children, worked with congregations in three different states, and have served the church in the areas of ministry, education and leadership. Friends and family say that more often than not the Mays are usually found together. Dr. May says the secret to their marital bliss is the application of Ephesians 5:22-25 to their marriage: "As each seeks the good and happiness of the other, each one finds greater happiness than if he sought his own good."

Faulkner alumni Eric ('90) and Denise (Ransom) Thornton ('92) along with their sons Taylor and Tanner were bestowed the Tower of Strength Family Award in admiration of the young family who exemplifies the qualities of Christian character and to lend encouragement to keep growing in Christ. The Thorntons, who met as students at Faulkner, were chosen due their service to their community, particularly the less fortunate among them. As the pulpit minister of the Holt Street Church of Christ in Montgomery, Eric has worked in prison ministry and currently donates his time to mentor and tutor at-risk students at a local elementary school. Denise also works with at-risk youths, developing an out-reach ministry at a local housing project where she and other women from the congregation present weekly Bible lessons and tutor children.

"Both of these couples are exemplary Christian marriages," says Hilliard. "We feel these two families deserve our appreciation and thanks for showing the rest of us that successful marriage and family is possible when couples follow God's plan."
