Starr encourages students
Jones School of Law Student Bar Association welcomed Kenneth Starr, dean of Pepperdine University School of Law in Malibu, Calif., and former U.S. Solicitor General under President George H. Bush, as the keynote speaker for the annual Barristers Dinner In February.
Arriving fresh from the National Prayer Breakfast in Washington D.C., Starr spoke to a sold-out audience and the media as to why the religious voice should not be silenced in the public square. As a Constitutional scholar and author of three books concerning the Constitution and the Supreme Court, Starr assured the audience that the religious voice is protected by the Constitution by the power of freedom of speech and that "we must keep the transformative power of faith in public."
Starr became a household name for his investigation of President Bill Clinton and his involvement with White House intern Monica Lewinsky. The Starr Report resulted in the 42nd president's impeachment charges. He and his thorough investigation of the popular president's indiscretions was the fodder of late night television jokes and brutal commentaries.
Starr will soon take on another controversial issue when he argues the case in favor of upholding the ban on gay marriage before the California Supreme Court. Already the internet is filing up with malicious blogs ranting about the esteemed law professor. Undaunted by the attacks, no doubt Starr will follow the advice he gave the law students: "When you enter the public square, do so humbly and smile, smile, smile as best you can."
