Fieldhouse opens doors

Faulkner University's fieldhouse name honors family of alumnus.
March 28 was a banner day for the Faulkner football team as school leaders officially opened the doors of the team's fieldhouse. Nearly 150 observers came to see the structure dedicated and the name unveiled. The Leopold D. Lee Family Fieldhouse, according to Hilyer, is the first of three steps towards bringing on-campus football to the University. The next two steps include constructing a field then a stadium in order to have the first on-campus game by the 2009 season.

The 7400-foot facility will be a permanent home for the Eagles' football program which has been moving around the campus in makeshift facilities for the last two years. The new facility contains a large locker room with 104 wood lockers and a state-of-the art training area for the players. The fieldhouse also includes a reception area, coaches' offices, meeting rooms, and a laundry area. According to coach Jim Nichols, the fieldhouse will be a valuable recruiting and retention tool. "It shows kids that we're dedicated to moving forward and that we mean what we say," said Nichols. "Before, we could only tell them about the great things that were going to happen here. Now we can show them."

The current facility is phase one of the fieldhouse. Phase two, which will occur upon completion of the football field, will expand the structure to 10,400 square feet and will include an area for the men's and women's soccer programs. The fieldhouse is named in honor of the late father of long-time Faulkner supporter and alumnus Tim Lee ('83). The name remained a surprise for the Lee family until it was unveiled. "I'm just so humbled," said an emotional Lee. "I know he (his father) would be so honored."
