Volleyball team sets up for success
This year’s volleyball team had something to prove. Even with many new faces, they were ready to take on any team. The talented freshmen could step into a starting position at a moment’s notice.
“Just as iron sharpens iron, this is pushing our upperclassmen to perform because they know they are competing for a starting position. It’s a very healthy spirit of competition,” said Tori Bartels, head volleyball coach.
To prepare for the season, Bartels and assistant coach Theresa Berry kept a rigorous practice schedule. Four-a-days—two team practices, one individual practice and one strength and conditioning session—have made a difference.
“The girls came in more focused and more determined. They have great attitudes and the eight returning players led the team to be very motivated,” Bartels explained enthusiastically.
This season marked the start of a junior varsity team, coached by alumna Lexie Emerson. Playing just a fraction of the number of varsity games, this team will be an excellent means for recruitment. Not only will the Eagles be able to pull athletes from the JV team, other players will come to light as they compete with local junior colleges.
“It’s our first year,” said Bartels, “so there will be scrapes and bruises—we already have some! But it will grow.”
