Eagle Football Makes its Hometown Debut
Saturday, Sept. 15 marked the day of Faulkner Universitys inaugural home football game. Five thousand fans swarmed Montgomerys Cramton Bowl to watch the Eagles play Webber International University of Babson Park, Fla. Even though Webbers Warriors walked away with a 26-7 victory, Faulkner fans found pride in their first home football game. It was great to see the people that showed up to support the team, said Kyle Ferguson, a senior Bible major. Competing as a first-year football program has to be tough, but the team played hard and made Faulkner proud.
The day started with several groups tailgating outside Cramton Bowl, including Royal Club and Kids Club members. Before the game began, Prattville High Schools marching band performed The Star Spangled Banner, and Dr. Cecil May, dean of the V.P. Black College of Biblical Studies, opened the event with prayer. President Billy D. Hilyer and head coach Jim Nichols were then presented with inaugural gameday footballs as souvenirs from this memorable day. Faulkners eagle mascot was also introduced for the first time with his new name, Baldwin.
During the game, the Eagles provided a stingy defense holding the Warriors to 86 yards rushing and taking four interceptions, two for Fred Poindexter and one each for Duron Robinson and David Crosby. Faulkners offense put together 259 yards, and quarterback Chad Kilgore scored the Eagles first home touchdown on a goal-line sneak late in the second quarter.
The team played a hard game with the full support of their fans. Thousands stood in the bleachers boasting Faulkners colors as they cheered on the new football team. It was great just to see all those people in blue and white sitting in the stands when we came on the field, said Nichols. Just knowing everyone was there supporting us for our very first home game is something Ill never forget.
