The Vanguard Camp for Biblical Preaching is a
mentoring program for
middle school and high school
age young men who have a
vision to devote themselves
to ministry in God's kingdom
as preachers, missionaries,
teachers and church leaders.
Faulkner University's V.P.
Black College of Biblical
Studies mission is to develop
the whole person through
spiritual, character, and
intellectual formation for
service in God's kingdom
through sharing the gospel in
order to improve the spiritual
and physical well-being of
people.
We have completed our first annual Vanguard Preaching Camp. The camp was an overwhelming success (not just my opinion!). We had 25 (our goal) campers, eight mentors, and two parents from Georgia who brought their young boys and stayed with them in the dorms. Nearly all our professors in the Bible college participated in leading a training session. We covered a wide range of topics-people skills, mysteries and riddles in the Bible, song leading, library skills, the preparation and delivery of sermons, impromptu speaking, and the mechanics of how to baptize someone. We stressed faithfulness to God's word, holiness of life, courage to withstand evil, and preparation to defend the truth. We "visited" places like the Ancient Near East where campers had the opportunity to hold a piece of authentic pottery from the days of king David, the Bible lands, and Greece. At every session, seeds were planted to generate a desire to work in God's kingdom as a minister, preacher, youth or university minister, missionary, elder or deacon, and to encourage our campers to consider attending Faulkner University for their training and preparation.
We concluded our camp with a mentor-led Bible study and worship service that included all campers. After worship we enjoyed a catered lunch by Jim and Nick's BBQ and had the opportunity to hear Devin Morris (mentor) give an impromptu speech on "How Christianity is like Jim and Nick's BBQ"! Treasure boxes (phylacteries), each containing an "ancient scroll" with the camp's theme Bible verses (2 Timothy 4:2), were given to each camper and mentor.
I look forward to next year's camp. Be watching for information about the 2013 Vanguard Preaching Camp. Contact me if you have any questions or would like more information.
